A Pirate Bay in the Cloud

The Pirate Bay is entering a new era as it moves all of its data from in-house servers in Sweden into the cloud in a move designed, in part, to evade the copyright cops. It all happened very quietly on Tuesday, and except for the five or so minutes of downtime, users were none the wiser. And that’s kind of the point. The Pirate Bay wants to keep its servers humming and those torrent streams flowing, regardless of whatever tricky tricks the authorities might try to pull. “Moving to the cloud lets TPB move from country to country, crossing borders seamlessly without downtime,” the organization told Torrent Freak. “All the servers don’t even have to be hosted with the same provider, or even on the same continent.”

It’s a great sounding plan. It really is, but will it work? In theory, the answer is yes. It’s actually more like, “Sure why not!,” since this kind of thing is basically unprecedented. Should there be a crackdown and the police do raid the Pirate Bay, they won’t be able to shut down the site from the office in Stockholm since the site’s data will be spread out across several servers in several different countries.
